Elastically expandable fabric elements(3) are located on the side of the airbag(6) and/or on the side of the airbag facing away from the occupant of the vehicle to form auxiliary chambers(4). When the gas pressure in the airbag drops at least part of the pressure is restored by the auxiliary chambers. The expandable fabric elements on the inside have a lining of material which is not penetrable by gas, and is especially rubber. The fabric elements are located in overflow openings(2) formed in the airbag and which may have pressure-dependent valves.
