The appts. (10) for working long workpieces, and especially wood beams, has a feed mechanism (11) to advance the workpiece which is interrupted at the working zone (12). A ring-shaped holder for a tool is at the working zone (12), on a plane at right angles to the feed direction, and the workpiece is fed through the opening in the holder. At least one tool (14) is mounted at the holder over and/or under and/or to the side of the workpiece. A number of tools of different types (14) can be fitted to the holder.
