A sensor (9) measures the pressures in the cylinder chamber of the engine (1). The pressure values are used to monitor the state of the sensor. Cylinder chamber pressure values are calculated from actual parameters of the internal combustion engine using a mathematical model. The deviation between the measured values and the calculated values is determined and used to diagnose a fault in the sensor if the deviation is outside a tolerance band having two thresholds (GW1, GW2).
