Cyclic and/or polymer compounds are prepared by metathesis of educts containing at least two functional groups in the form of optionally substituted alkene or alkyne units in the presence of one or more heterogeneous catalysts and ionic liquids. The catalysts are transition metal carbenes or transition metal compounds which form the carbenes under the conditions used, or transition metals salts in combination with an alkylation agent.
