The automobile passenger seat has a seat squab (1) and a backrest (2) which is pivoted about a horizontal axis (3) relative to the seat squab for adjusting its inclination angle, with a compression spring element (4) acting between the seat squab and the backrest. The compression spring elements acts against a curved surface (2a) of the backrest which has a radius of curvature which varies in dependencen on the backrest inclination angle.
