A process for the production of an aqueous polymer dispersion (I) containing polymer particles, having a weight average particle diameter of no greater than 300 nm comprises polymerization in the presence of a radical chain transfer compound, having a solubility greater than 1x10-5 mole/kg water at 20 deg C and 1 bar absolute. At least one monomer, having an ethylenically unsaturated group, comprising less than 90 wt.% styrene, is homogeneously distributed in an aqueous medium and is polymerized by means of a radical initiator in the presence of a radical chain transfer compound, having a solubility greater than 1x10-5 mole/kg water at 20 deg C and 1 bar absolute. Independent claims are included for: (1) the polymer dispersion (I); and (2) a polymer powder prepared by drying the dispersion (I).
