The spaced knitted material (11), with air distribution between the knitted layers, has an air inlet/outlet zone with the greatest possible air permeability in one of the knitted layers (21). A matching zone with the lowest possible air permeability is at the other knitted layer (22), facing the air inlet/outlet zone in the first layer. Additional zones surround the low-permeable zone, where their air permeability increases as they extend increasingly from the first zone with high air permeability. One knitted layer (21) has a unified and highest possible air permeability, or it has a very low air permeability apart from the structured inlet/outlet zone. The high permeable zone can be surrounded by spaced knitted zones of decreasing permeability. The additional zones have a defined width and, within themselves, have a consistent air permeability. Within their contours, they can have sections with high and low air permeability, with differing distributions between zones. The additional zones can have an infinitesimal width, with an air permeability changing steadily with an increasing gap from the high permeable zone. All the structured air permeable zones are arranged in parallel strips, or the first two zones are in concentric circles with additional zones as concentric rings. The zone of high air permeability is formed in one knitted layer (21) where the wales in every given number bond alternately with their right and left neighboring wales to give a lozenge pattern of wales with open fields. The low air permeable zones are formed in the same way, with inserted wefts free of tension to close the open zones. The fabric with a unified low air permeability is knitted densely, without structures, and can contain fusible filaments which are melted to form a closed layer or a film can be laminated to it. An Independent claim is included for a spaced knitted material to cover an upholstery padding of rubber strands or foam, where at least one air channel (24) is at a fabric layer (21) with a zone of high air permeability. Preferred Features: A film, or a nonwoven with low air permeability, is inserted between the upholstery padding and the spaced knitted material to cover the zones outside the high permeable zone. Heating wires can be worked into one of the knitted layers.
