Preparation of sec. aliphatic amines from medium chain-length aldehydes by catalysed reductive amination with ammonia in a solvent, followed by conversion of the obtained prim. amine to an azomethine and then hydrogenation to a sec. amine is such that the whole reaction is carried out as a one-pot process without isolation of intermediates. Preparation of sec. aliphatic amines from medium chain-length aldehydes by catalysed reductive amination with ammonia in a solvent, followed by conversion of the obtained prim. amine to an azomethine and then hydrogenation to a sec. amine is such that: (a) the whole reaction is effected in a one-pot process without filtration, distillation or other isolation of intermediate; (b) following the prim. amine synthesis the mixture is relaxed to normal pressure to give complete evaporation of the ammonia and solvent; (c) equimolar amounts of prim. amine and aldehyde are used in the sec. amine synthesis; and (d) the final reaction mixture is worked up by filtration and distillation.
