To test the joints (20) a vibration motor (38) is attached to the wheel flange (32) of the suspension system (10). This can be done with wheel in position (vehicle laden or unladen) or removed, in which case the mass inertia of the system is reduced. When vibrated the presence of a defective joint is indicated acoustically, by the use of a vibration sensor (42), or the inspector can identify it by touch
