Process for testing used wood comprises homogenizing wooden chips, pressing under high pressure into tablet-like sample bodies with planar surfaces and analyzing using X-ray fluorescence and ion mobility spectroscopy in which the excited X-ray beam hits the sample surface at a very flat angle. The beam heats the sample and raises the vapor pressure of the volatile wood contents which are then fed to an ion mobility spectrometer via a suction system. The absolute chlorine values determined by X-ray fluorescence are used to calibrate the ion mobility spectrometer with respect to the wood protection agents.
