摘要
An aqueous dispersion (I) of a polymer and fine particulate inorganic particles is prepared by a radical aquoeus emulsion polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer dispersed in an aqueous medium using a radical initiator in the presence of a dispersed fine particle inorganic solid and a dispersing agent. A process for the preparation of an aqueous dispersion of a polymer and fine particulate inorganic particles comprises radical aquoeus emulsion polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer dispersed in an aqueous medium using a radical initiator in the presence of a dispersed fine particle inorganic solid and a dispersing agent. The process is characterized by (A) a stable aqueous dispersion containing inorganic material having an initial solids content of at least 1 wt.%, which, one hour after its preparation, retains more than 90 wt.% of the dispersed solids in dispersed form having an average diameter of less than or equal to 100 nm. (B) the dispersion comprising inorganic particles in a standard aqueous alkali chloride solution has a different electrophoretic mobility to the null point at a pH corresponding to the initial pH of the aqueous reaction medium (C) the radical producing component has a electrical charge that is opposite in sign to the electrophoretic mobility of the dispersed particles in a standard aqueous alkali chloride solution at a pH corresponding to the initial pH of the reaction medium. Independent claims are included for (i) an aqueous dispersion (I) of composite particles prepared by the process and (ii) a composite particle powder prepared by drying the dispersion (I).
