The unit (1) has at least two exhaust lines (6-9) leading from an exhaust manifold (2) fitted at the cylinder head (3) of the engine (4). The exhaust gas lines open into inlet openings (11,12) of a catalyst element (14). The catalyst element and an outlet opening (13) connected to it are formed with an oval cross-section. The inlet openings and the areas of the exhaust lines opening into them have an oval cross-section.
