The element (1) has one or more optical fibers enclosed by a protective sleeve, whereby the fibers and/or the sleeve are made of a synthetic polymer material that deforms under the action of heat and retains a desired shape after cooling. The fibers and sleeve are placed in a holder (5), heated and cooled, whereby the sleeve and/or fibers are permanently deformed to the shape of the holder. Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of forming an optical fiber waveguide element.
