A carrier material(12) strip comprising a continuous strip with an elastomer coating material is fed onto a surface of the metal layer(32) and the elastomer layer is transferred by a heated embossing tool onto the metal surface. An Independent claim is made for a flat seal (32) for an internal combustion engine with a metal layer coated by the claimed process.
