An antimicrobial copolymer is made by copolymerization of an acryloyloxyalkylamino compound with an aliphatic unsaturated monomer. An antimicrobial copolymer is made by copolymerization of (A) an acryloyloxyalkylamino compound of formula (I) with (B) an aliphatic unsaturated monomer. R1 = H or Me; R2 = 1-5C hydrocarbon group; Y = NR3R4 or NR3R4R5X-; R3-R5 = optionally substituted aliphatic or aromatic 1-50C hydrocarbon group; and X = (CH3SO4)-, (NO3)-, F-, Cl-, Br-, I-, (CH3CH2)-, (NO2)-, NO-, CN-, SCN-, CNO-, ClO-, (ClO2)-, (ClO3)- or (ClO4)-.
