According to a known method for producing a quartz glass blank for optical waveguides, a core rod with a quartz glass core with a first refractive index and a jacket which radially delimits the core and which has at least one inner jacket layer consisting of a quartz glass with a second refractive index is produced, said inner jacket layer bordering the core. The core rod is coated with a coating tube consisting of porous quartz glass, said coating tube being sintered and hereby shrunk onto the core rod. The aim of the invention is to develop an economical and reproducible method for producing a quartz glass blank for optical waveguides with low optical damping, based on this known method, and to provide a corresponding blank. To this end, the invention provides that the core (1) and the inner jacket layer (2; 3; 7) are produced according to the OVD, MCVD, PCVD or VAD method and that the core rod (4) is coated with a coating tube (5) produced according to the OVD method.
