An object has two types of color-generating particles in a near-surface layer that alter the color of this layer through the effect of laser radiation (1-3) applied with two or more different wavelengths. The object is treated by laser radiation with a vector and/or grid method using a two-coordinate beam-deflecting device (6) and a focussing device (7) to focus radiation on a layer of the object, beams being guided through these devices by a beam-guiding device (8).
