The method for dividing a stack of sheets of paper to separate a portion of predetermined size comprises inserting a lifting device at a defined height in the stack and raising it to create a first gap (AS1). Additional devices are then inserted and lifted to create additional gaps (AS4). When a gap has been created across the complete stack the sheets supported by the lifting devices is moved on for further processing. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the process.
