Production of filter layers comprises forming an aqueous suspension (19) containing natural fibers; applying the suspension to a carrier belt (11) to form a material strip (17); adjusting the thickness of the material strip; drying the strip and cutting the filter layers from the material strip into lengths. The material strip is subjected to microwaves (MW) in the moist state. Preferred Features: The material strip is dried by the microwave energy before it is passed through an oven or in the oven. The natural fibers are cellulose fibers. The carrier belt is a sieving belt.
