Process for preheating the charge of an electric arc furnace (1) comprises preheating the charge, preferably, hot briquetted iron or direct reduced iron, by flue gas from the furnace and in direct flow with the transporting direction of the charge with controlled oxygen content of the flue gas. An Independent claim is also included for a device for preheating the charge of an electric arc furnace comprising a preheating shaft (4) whose upper end (3) is in contact with the furnace and its lower end in contact with a low pressure source (20), and a gas burner (22) with regulated oxygen content of its flue gas.
