The method involves referencing the device in a computer-supported, camera-supported navigation system using a position marker arrangement (4) on the operating device (3). At least one x-ray image projection of the device is acquired and the complete external shape of the device is classified in the navigation system using the orientation of the position marker arrangement in the projection.
