The electromagnetic braking device has a housing (1) enclosing an electromagnetic armature (16) which is biased via a brake spring (21) into contact with a brake plate (8), for providing the braking force. The armature is released from the brake plate when current is supplied to a magnetic coil (19), with at least one servo edge (5) of the armature providing an additional force component upon disconnection of the magnetic coil current, acting in the same direction as the spring force.
