The arrangement (1) has a cooled photomultiplier (4) or CCD camera facing the biological cells and an illumination arrangement to illuminate the cells. The illumination arrangement comprises a number of photodiodes or other light sources arranged symmetrically about the light sensor. Different pairs of photodiodes may be controlled together. The photodiodes may be controlled in separate groups, having different spectral outputs. An Independent claim is included for a method for using the arrangement.
