A process for the production of Grignard compounds from organic halides and magnesium metal in a solvent in the presence of a Group 3-11 transition metal catalyst bonded to at least one Group 14-17 element is characterized by an additional catalyst component comprising a compound containing a Group 1, 2 or 13 metal bonded to a Group 14-17 element or hydrogen.
