The chip card is composed of a card body (5) and a display (4) with two carrier layers (10,11) of a mechanically flexible glass/plastics compound material. It has a thin glass layer (13) and a plastics part-zone (15,16) of the card body (5). One of the two carrier layers (10,11) is of a thin glass layer (13) and a plastics part-zone (15,16) of the card body (5), and the other layer is of a thin glass layer (13) and a separate plastics layer. The carrier using a separate plastics layer in a compound glass/plastics material is structured with the glass layer (13) on the side towards the functional layer (12) and the separate plastics layer is away from it. The compound glass/plastics layer in the upper carrier (10) has a thin glass layer (13) and an upper plastics part-zone (15) of the card body (5) and, in the lower carrier (11), a thin glass layer (13) and a lower plastics part-zone (16) of the card body (5). The lower carrier layer (11) can be a substrate layer of a mechanically flexible material, or a mechanically flexible sealing layer to seal the functional layer (12). The material for the substrate or sealing layer has a coefficient of gas diffusion which is in the glass range. The functional layer (12) is an electronically controlled display using liquid crystals (LC) or light emitting diodes (LED), or light emitting organic polymers. The functional layer (12) has electronic units to control or affect the display of information. An Independent claim is included for the production of a chip card with a card body (5) composed of a number of layers bonded together by an adhesive or lamination, where at least one layer is of plastics. At least a thin glass layer (13) of the display (4) is bonded or laminated to a plastics layer of the card body (5) so that, together, they form a combined plastics/glass structure.
