Production of metal-doped alumina comprises preparing an ammonium dawsonite precursor, ion-exchanging the precursor with dopant metal ions, and calcining the precursor at 600-900 deg C until alumina containing dopant metal particles smaller than 10 nm is obtained. Production of metal-doped alumina comprises: (a) preparing an ammonium dawsonite precursor of formula (I) or (II) from an aqueous solution of an aluminum salt, ammonium (bi)carbonate and optionally a metal (M) salt: M = Fe, Cr, La, lanthanide, Ga, In and/or B. (b) ion-exchanging the precursor with a metal salt solution in which the metal is iron, copper, barium, silver, gold, manganese, cobalt, platinum, rhodium, iridium and/or ruthenium; and (c) calcining the precursor at 600-900 deg C until alumina containing dopant metal particles smaller than 10 nm is obtained.
