The method involves producing a difference signal from a continuously detected compressor operating parameter and a demand value depending on the working point position in a characteristic field and producing a regulator input signal via a delay element to control a valve branching off the compressor outlet. Different delay time constants are used for increasing and decreasing difference signal for slower changes towards the pump limiting line. Independent claims are also included for the following: a device for regulating a turbo compressor to prevent pumping.
