Process for treating a material in a reactor (3) with a reaction chamber (21) containing catalyst allows the active cross-section of the reaction chamber to be altered, depending on the process parameters. The pressure in the reactor and a distribution pipe (19) connected to it is used provide access to or seal off the catalyst in one or both of these. An independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the process comprising a spring piston (17, 18) mounted in the reactor or distribution pipe which is compressed against a mounting (20) by the pressure on the material.
