Device comprises an interface for reading in 2-D images into a computer to enable a 3-D depiction of a joint or bone. The computer can display sections through a joint or bone or a perspective view according to a user selection. Images can be stored in memory. A user interface allows a user to draw construction lines on the bone images in a fixed coordinate system. A unit can then use these coordinates to fix and align in 3-D space a prosthesis (4) relative to the joint. An independent claim is made for designing and producing a prosthesis to replace a bone or joint. The method includes a step for controlling a machine tool so that it cuts a replacement according to 3-D coordinates stored in the computer.
