The heating element (13) is made of a semiconducting ceramic material and has a negative temperature coefficient of its electrical resistance. The temperature coefficient is continuously negative over its operating temperature range. The material of the heating element contains silicon, preferably silicon carbide. The material is doped silicon carbide, especially doped with nitrogen, or reaction-dependent silicon carbide. Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of manufacturing an electrical heating element.
