In a space heater, control of the water heating process requires regulating the actual water temperature in the boiler (Kist) via a first (101), or a second (102) controller, and during operation of the heating installation by transferring for one controller (101,102) to the other (102,101). The desired water temperature (Ksoll) in the boiler and/or the control difference (Kdiff) obtained from the relationship (Ksoll-Kist) is changed during the transference to reduce overshoots of the controlled magnitude.
