The hood (36) sidewalls parallel to the vibro-conveyor flow line are themselves parallel to one another and vertical and the suction device (44) is mounted directly on the hood. The suction device separates the suctioned tobacco (6) out of the exhausted gas by a centrifugal separator and the suction device (44) uses a cellular conveyor (62) to take the separated tobacco off at the downstream end of the hood (36) to pass the tobacco straight back to the treated tobacco (6) within the hood. The layout is for drying or cooling the tobacco (6b) layers, passing this through a treatment zone where gas is blown up against gravity through the tobacco to fluidize it. Gas is drawn off from above the fluidized bed.
