For the head of a road vehicle occupant, the protective cushion comprises an occupant-side layer and a door-side layer arranged over one another and joined together at seams (4-9), forming free chambers (11-14) between them. The one seam (4) runs along the lower edges of the layers from the front end (1F) to the rearward end of the cushion. The seam (4) is curved away in a U-shape from the lower edges of the layers in the vicinity of the rearward end (1R), whereby an elongated chamber (10) is formed between it and the next seam (5). The other seams are individually orientated, one (5) running along the upper edges of the layers, one (6) joining the middle sections of the layers, one (7) joining the layers in the center of the first chamber (11), and two (8,9) extending vertically to separate three chambers (12,13,14) from one another.
