The valve gear for an internal combustion engine involves a securement against turning for a tappet (2). The tappet preferably has a cylindrical contact surface (3) for a cam (1). The tappet with its contact surface is so formed and arranged in relation to the cam that a theoretical straight line (9) running parallel to the tappet movement direction passes through a camshaft axis (4) parallel next to a theoretical straight line (10) through a radius axis (5) of the contact surface. Through these measures, the tappet aligns itself, particularly on contact with a basic circle or point of a cam.
