Monitoring and switching device has signal source supplying signals for control device (5), controlling operation of extractor fan (6) in engine exhaust extraction duct (7). A sensor (3) is inserted in automobile current circuit for detecting voltage characteristic between starting the engine and normal engine running, evaluated by an evaluation device, for supplying signals to the control device, via transmitter (2) and antenna (2a). An Independent claim for a method for on-off switching of an automobile engine exhaust fume extraction system is also included.
