Recording and deleting is carried out using a thermal print head. To record data an energy pulse (W) is applied to the heating elements of the thermal print head. The energy pulse causes the recording material to heat up to a temperature (T1) at which it becomes colored or opaque. To delete data a recording energy pulse (W) is followed by an energy pulse train (E1).
