Method for purifying, stabilizing and/or isolating nucleic acid (I) from material samples by treating the sample with a buffer (A). The sample (or its mixture with (A), or derived homogenate, lysate or extract) is not treated with a carbohydrate-based adsorption matrix (B). (A) has pH 2-6.5, a salt content at least 0.1 M and includes a phenol-neutralizing agent (II). An Independent claim is also included for a reagent kit for the process, containing (A) but not (B).
