The melt (6) is loaded with gas outside the mold (2, 3) before injecting it into the mold cavity (4). Outer skin thickness is controlled by thermal conditions at the mold surface. Initiation of foaming is controlled by pressure conditions. The foam structure is adjusted by relative motion of the injection mold halves.
