The sensor wire protective circuitry has a sensor wire connected at the cable periphery, or the cable end, with a short-circuit switch reacting in delay-free fashion to provide electronic protection. The sensor wire is connected at the cable periphery or cable end with a short-circuit switch (12-15) reacting in a delay-free fashion. This forms a fully electronically working protection for the cable against insulation puncture of the sensor wires. Protection is also provided for the connected sensor wire measuring system against overvoltages resulting from short transient voltage peaks, or long overvoltages, on the basis of short-circuit currents of the cable system. The short-circuit switch is such that it short circuits the high resistance insulated sensor wire to earth, only in the case of a fault for the length of the overvoltage disturbances. This requires no special reset.
