Production of a high strength austenitic steel comprises rolling or forging the steel at deformation temperatures below the solution annealing temperature (1000-1100 [deg] C); and producing a very fine non-recrystallizable structure by rapidly cooling in air and/or water. Preferred Features: The steel has an offset yield stress of 300-800 N/mm2 and a tensile strength of 600-1000 N/mm2 at breaking elongations of 40-20 %.
