A shock absorber for torsional vibration has two or more masses that can rotate relative to each other and are connected via a smooth member. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) forming a shock absorber as above where the member is formed by injection molding a plastic or by pressing the masses together; (b) forming a shock absorber as above where a collar is formed on a sub-assembly of the member before it is fixed to one of the masses; (c) forming a shock absorber as above includes gauging a sliding surface of a sub-assembly of the member before or after it is fitted to one of the masses; and (d) a mandrel for gauging a bearing used in a shock absorber or its manufacture as above. The mandrel has a gauging region, a gauging diameter and an application region of smaller diameter than the gauging diameter.
