Slave-specific messages are generated for a number of slave systems and are combined to form a first message combined frame. The slave-specific messages in the first combined frame are used to generate first slave-specific frames with a destination slave system, to which they are transferred. A number of second slave-specific frames are stored at a second end that are received by the target slave system in response to the first slave-specific frames. A second combined frame is generated representing the second slave-specific frames. The method involves generating first slave-specific messages for a number of slave systems, whereby each slave-specific message has a target-slave system. The first messages are combined to form a first message combined frame. The combined frame is transferred via a communications link with a master system at one end and a slave system at the other end. The slave-specific messages in the first combined frame are used to generate first slave-specific frames with a destination slave system. These frames are transferred to the destination slave system. A number of second slave-specific frames are stored at a second end that are received by the target slave system in response to the first slave-specific frames. A second combined frame is generated representing the second slave-specific frames and transferred to the first end of the link.
