Circular polarizer has a layer made of an optical anisotropic material with a helically twisted molecular structure and planar orientation, and a layer made of an optical isotropic layer. The isotropic material is selected so that its refractive index agrees with the average refractive index of the anisotropic material. An Independent claim is also included for a process for raising the ellipticity of a circular polarizer. Preferred Features: The layer made of an optical anisotropic material consists of a linear or crosslinked polymerized liquid crystal material having a macroscopic uniform planar orientation.
