Process for treating a medium with microorganisms comprises: (a) introducing microorganisms into the medium from a bioreactor; (b) measuring a physical, chemical and/or biochemical parameter of the medium; and (c) controlling the operation of the bioreactor in response to the measured parameter to alter the composition, activity and/or amount of the microorganisms introduced into the medium. An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out such a process, comprising a bioreactor and devices for performing steps (a)-(c).
