The heat exchanger has a core area (130) for effecting heat exchange between first and second fluids and containing multiple small pipes (120) forming an internal through passage for the first fluid. The small pipes form several spaces (112) between them. Ribs (111) are arranged in a space between adjacent pipes, in order to facilitate heat exchange between the first and second fluids. A core housing (143) contains the core area and forms a second through passage, which contains the several spaces through which the second fluid flows. A flow guide component (113) in the second through passage prevents the second fluid by-passing the several spaces between adjacent small pipes. The first fluid is a coolant and the second fluid is the exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine.
