The release element (15) for a portable hand-warmer has a thin, flexible stainless steel strip oval in shape with a center section. One surface is recessed inwards to form a concave surface. The opposite side has a convex surface and protruding surface. The strip has an outer annular section with slits (17) cutting through the center section.
