The control unit for automatic operation of a transmission has a first rod(31) for a control or selection action of the transmission by a rotational movement, and a second rod(32) for a control or selection action by an axial movement. The respective rotational and axial movements of the two rods is effected by respective first(33) and second(34) electromagnetic drive sources in the form of electric motors. A hollow section(31B) is provided on the rotational axis of the first rod and into it enters the second rod so that the latter can move axially therein but not rotate in the relation to it.
