A service computer (14) stores an application program containing an algorithm relating measurements from test coins inserted into the tester and those of standard coin(s) of the coin-value being tested. A smart card (16) stores authorization to use the application program. A chip card reader (18) is connected to the computer. A selector connects the service computer, with an input of the electronic coin tester, connected to the chip card reader or to a memory unit of the tester.
