The method concerns production of an additive containing 5-90 % by weight (preferably 10-50 % by weight) of titanium dioxide for use during production of metal, in particular, ferrous materials by a melting process. A mixture consisting of 20-80 % by weight of residues containing titanium or titanium compounds, and of 20-80 % by weight of residues containing iron or iron compounds is prepared and thermally treated at temperatures of 200-1300 degrees C. The additive thus produced is applied during production of metal materials to improve the durability of the melting furnace lining.
