This sensor for the control of particles in flight, is remarkable in that a mask (12) is placed in a plane substantially parallel to the trajectory of the particles (4). The mask defines at least two slots (13 - 14) which are substantially parallel to be arranged in a direction having at least one component at a right angle with the trajectory. The slots have their ends which are offset with respect to the other. The radiation emitted, dispersed or absorbed by the particles is controlled when they pass through the field of vision of the slots. The particles for which the radiation emitted, dispersed or well absorbed, which is collected through each slot when they pass successively in front of said slots, has a predetermined relationship, are identified, and the diameter of the particles to be identified is determined from the quantity of radiation emitted, dispersed or well absorbed when the particles identified pass in front of the slots.
